What the IAB's New AI Visibility Standard Means for Small Businesses

Presence, Prominence, Portrayal, Persuasion — and why "decision-grade" is the phrase to remember

On August 3, 2026, the Interactive Advertising Bureau published Measuring Visibility in the AI Era — the first industry-wide standard for measuring how brands and publishers show up inside AI-generated answers.

The framing in the IAB's own announcement is the part worth reading twice: more than 20 companies now sell AI visibility measurement tools, each with its own methodology, and they can produce different answers for the same brand. Without shared definitions, the market cannot tell signal from noise.

"Consumers are increasingly discovering and considering brands and products in AI platforms, but measurement frameworks haven't kept pace. This playbook gives the industry a common foundation for evaluating AI visibility consistently and with confidence."
— Caroline Giegerich, VP, AI, IAB

The 4 Ps, in plain language

The IAB organizes AI visibility metrics into a causal hierarchy — each layer only matters if the one before it is true.

  • Presence — do you appear in the answer at all? Mention rate, citation rate, share of voice, visibility momentum.
  • Prominence — where and how visibly do you appear? Placement, ranking order, and whether your content is drawn upon substantively or cited in passing.
  • Portrayal — in what context, and how accurately? Sentiment, framing, hallucination rate, factual inaccuracy rate. This is a brand safety dimension that simply did not exist in traditional search.
  • Persuasion — does the visibility drive action? Recommendation strength and post-citation click-through.

If you have been tracking "are we mentioned in ChatGPT," you have been measuring Presence only — the first of four layers.

The line that should change how you buy reporting

The framework introduces a two-tier quality classification:

  • Directional measurement — useful for spotting patterns and competitive awareness, but explicitly not sufficient for budget allocation or strategy decisions.
  • Decision-grade measurement — meets a higher bar across query volume, sample size, prompt-type coverage, testing cadence, reproducibility, and platform coverage. This is the required standard before you move money.

For a small or mid-sized business, that distinction is the whole ballgame. Most AI visibility dashboards on the market today are directional. They are being sold — and priced — as if they were decision-grade.

What this means if you run a small or mid-sized business

Three practical takeaways:

  1. Ask your provider which tier their data is. Query volume, prompt coverage, cadence, and reproducibility are now standard questions with standard names. You do not have to be technical to ask them.
  2. Stop treating a mention as a win. Portrayal is where most businesses are quietly losing — described inaccurately, framed as the wrong category, or hedged into a generic list. Nobody was reporting that to you last year.
  3. Measurement is not remediation. The IAB standardizes how visibility is measured. It does not tell you how to fix a gap once you find it. That work — content, proof, citations, entity clarity — is still yours to do. See why measurement dashboards aren't remediation.

Why we think this is good news

A shared vocabulary makes it much harder to sell a screenshot of a chatbot as a strategy. It also gives buyers language to push back with. We have written a full evergreen breakdown of the framework — including how each of the 4 Ps maps to work you can actually do — here: The IAB 4 Ps of AI Visibility, explained.

If you want to see where you currently sit on Presence and Portrayal across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity, run the AI Visibility Checker — it takes a couple of minutes and gives you something concrete to hold your reporting up against.
