Bots now outnumber humans on the web.

Bots now outnumber humans on the web. That sounds a little terrifying.

But for businesses, I think we're asking the wrong question.

The question isn't: “Why are all these bots visiting my website?”

It's: “What are they looking for when they get there, and can they understand my business?”

Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince says automated traffic crossed a major threshold this year, with bots accounting for nearly 60% of website requests at the crossover point in May.

But not all bots are doing the same thing.

Cloudflare now separates AI traffic into three categories: • Search, machines discovering and indexing information • Agents, AI accessing the web in real time on behalf of a person • Training, crawlers collecting information to train or fine-tune models

That distinction matters enormously.

For years, we built websites assuming the primary visitor was a person. They landed on your homepage. They clicked Services. They read About Us. They filled out a form.

That's no longer the only audience.

Increasingly, a machine may visit your website before a human ever does.

Someone asks an AI assistant: “Who is the best company for X?” “What company has experience with Y?” “Compare these three providers.” “Who should I trust?”

The machine goes looking for evidence. • Your services • Your expertise • Your geography • Your products • Your FAQs • Your comparisons • Your customer experiences • Your press and third-party authority • Your founder's expertise • The relationships between all of those things

This is why I've been saying AI visibility isn't simply another version of SEO. Your website is becoming something else.

It's becoming a knowledge source for machines that answer questions on behalf of humans.

And being crawlable isn't enough.

A machine must be able to understand what you do, retrieve the right information, connect it to the question being asked, and find enough evidence to trust it.

"Crawlable" does not automatically mean understandable. Understandable does not automatically mean recommendable.

The companies that understand this shift aren't just publishing more content. They're building a business that machines can understand.

And now we're starting to see the infrastructure data showing just how quickly that machine audience is arriving.
