Nearly 3 out of 4 businesses recommended by AI were not in Google’s Top 10 for the same searches.

That should get every marketer’s attention.

For years, visibility has largely meant one thing: Can we get onto page one of Google?

But AI is building a different shortlist.

A recent AI visibility study found that about 75% of businesses recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude were not ranking in Google’s top 10 for the corresponding searches.

That does not mean SEO stopped mattering.

It means ranking and recommendation are no longer the same job. A business can: • Rank well in Google and still be absent from AI recommendations • Be recommended by AI without ranking on page one • Be discovered through third-party sources instead of its own website • Perform very differently across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI

This is why I keep coming back to the difference between being findable and being recommendable.

Google ranking tells you where you appear in search.

AI recommendation tells you whether a system understands your business well enough to include you in the answer.

Those are different outcomes.

And they need different measurement.

The questions I care about now are: • Are we present? • Are we being cited? • Are we showing up for the right buyer questions? • Are we actually being recommended? • Who gets recommended when we are not?

Google page one still matters. It is just no longer the whole scoreboard.

The businesses AI recommends and the businesses Google ranks are increasingly two different lists.
