Is Reputation Remediation Working? Measure It With the 4 Ps

Reputation remediation needs a scorecard. The 4 Ps — Presence, Prominence, Portrayal and Performance — give you one that fits AI-generated answers rather than ranked lists of links.

Traditional reputation metrics — average star rating, review volume, sentiment score — tell you how a platform summarizes your customers. They do not tell you how an AI system describes your business when a buyer asks who to hire. For that you need a different scorecard.

The 4 Ps framework, aligned with Interactive Advertising Bureau guidance on AI visibility measurement, gives one. We cover the general framework in the IAB 4 Ps of AI visibility measurement; this page applies it specifically to reputation work.

Presence: do you appear at all?

Presence is binary and unforgiving: when a buyer asks a question you should own, does your business show up in the answer? Not on page two — in the answer.

To measure it, build a fixed set of buyer-intent prompts and run them across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot. Record appearance rate per platform. Reputation remediation affects presence when unaddressed criticism or conflicting facts were making the business harder to represent confidently.

Presence is not a byproduct of traditional search position. See strong in traditional search, invisible in AI.

Prominence: how central are you in the answer?

Appearing once in a list of eight is not the same as being the recommended option. Prominence asks where you land within the response.

  • Are you named first, in the middle, or last?
  • Are you a recommendation or a passing mention?
  • Which of your sources are cited — your own site, or third-party evidence?
  • Do you appear alongside competitors, or instead of them?

Prominence is where off-site evidence carries the most weight, which is what CommunityIQ™ — off-site authority and citation intelligence — is built to track.

Portrayal: how are you described?

Portrayal is the measure most directly tied to reputation remediation. Appearing in an answer is only useful if the characterization is accurate.

  • Themes. Do the recurring negative themes from your audit still appear — "hard to reach," "missed appointments," "unclear pricing"?
  • Caveats. Does the answer hedge about you specifically while describing competitors without qualification?
  • Accuracy. Are the facts about services, pricing and location correct? Conflicting information across listings tends to show up here first.
  • Recency. Is the description based on current evidence, or on material that predates the changes you made?

Track portrayal qualitatively by saving the actual response text each month. Changes in adjectives and caveats are often the earliest signal that remediation is landing — before presence or prominence move at all.

Performance: does it produce business?

Performance connects visibility to outcomes. Watch referral traffic from AI platforms in your analytics, direct or branded traffic that follows an AI-assisted discovery, and — most useful — what new inquiries say when asked how they found you. "ChatGPT recommended you" is the clearest data point you will get.

Attribution here is imperfect and likely undercounts. Treat performance as directional evidence alongside the other three Ps, not as a standalone proof. More on this in measuring the ROI of AI visibility.

Running it as a repeatable measurement

  • Use the same prompt wording every time; small changes in phrasing change the answer.
  • Run monthly, on the same platforms, and log the full response text.
  • Re-audit the underlying evidence quarterly.
  • Expect variance — direction across several runs matters more than any single result.

Measurement tells you where you stand; it does not change the record. That distinction is the subject of why measurement dashboards aren't remediation. The work itself is laid out in the 30-day plan and the pillar guide.

Frequently asked questions

What are the 4 Ps of AI visibility measurement?

Presence, Prominence, Portrayal and Performance. It is a framework aligned with Interactive Advertising Bureau guidance for evaluating brand visibility inside AI-generated answers, rather than in a ranked list of links.

How is this different from tracking keyword rankings?

Rankings measure position in a list of links. The 4 Ps measure whether you appear in a synthesized answer at all, how central you are within it, how you are characterized, and whether that translates into qualified inquiries.

How often should I measure?

Run the same prompt set monthly using consistent wording, and re-audit the underlying evidence quarterly. Single runs vary; a repeated series is what shows direction.
