Why this page exists
We would rather turn away an engagement than take money from a business that isn't ready to convert the leads AI visibility will send. The work is real, and it compounds — but it compounds on top of a working foundation, not in place of one. This page is meant to help you self-diagnose before we ever talk.
When AI visibility may not matter yet
Some businesses genuinely do not need to prioritize AI visibility this quarter. Common patterns:
- Your buyers do not use AI to make decisions in your category yet. Rare and shrinking, but real in a few verticals.
- You are pre-product-market-fit and your positioning is still shifting week to week. AI visibility rewards a consistent story; a moving story confuses it.
- You cannot yet convert a qualified inbound lead. Sending AI-referred prospects into a broken sales process wastes both the lead and the investment.
- Your service is fully at capacity for the next 12 months and you have no plan to expand.
When SEO is still enough
Traditional search still carries certain buyer journeys. If your business fits any of these, keep investing in SEO first:
- High-volume e-commerce with hundreds of product pages competing on generic queries.
- Purely local businesses whose buyers still type "[service] near me" into Google Maps and click.
- Informational content businesses monetized by display advertising against long-tail keywords.

When local referrals are still your main engine
Plenty of excellent businesses run almost entirely on referrals — chambers, BNI, past clients, partner networks. If that engine is fully covering your growth targets, AI visibility can wait. What we would recommend even in this case: at minimum, make sure the AI can find and describe you accurately when a referred buyer double-checks you in ChatGPT before booking. That is a very small, one-time hygiene project, not a full engagement.
When you should wait
- The website is functionally broken (slow, unresponsive on mobile, forms don't submit). Fix that first.
- No consistent way to describe what you actually do. Positioning first, visibility second.
- No lightweight measurement in place. Without a baseline, you cannot tell whether the work is compounding.
- Undifferentiated services with no proof, no case studies, no reviews. The AI needs something to point at.
When waiting becomes risky
Waiting is fine until it isn't. The pattern we see most often: a business waits one cycle too long, and by the time they start, a competitor has already become the "name the AI says." Once a competitor holds that position, dislodging them takes significantly more work than being early would have.
Signs the risk of waiting has flipped:
- Buyers are already showing up to sales calls citing AI research about your competitors.
- Your AI visibility score is low and a direct competitor's is not.
- Referrals are softening and paid channels are getting more expensive.
- Your category has one or two brands that already dominate AI responses.
How to run a small AI visibility check before investing heavily
Before you commit budget, run a light gap check to see what the four major AI systems say about you today. You don't need us for the first pass:
- Ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity your top three buyer questions and note whether you appear by name.
- Check how each AI describes you, and whether the descriptions agree.
- Ask each AI to recommend the best provider in your category and market — note who is named instead of you.
- Run the AI Visibility Checker for a structured baseline across the four systems.
If the result is "the AI doesn't know I exist or is naming my competitor," the readiness question is settled.
